WHY US

Neurodiversity Affirming Practice Diagram

Clinicians at CoolKid Psychology provide professional therapeutic services and support based on current science, delivered to you with skill and compassion. We work collaboratively and are passionate about making a difference in the life of others. We go well beyond, and often avoid, traditional behaviour management strategies bringing instead an understanding that ‘behavioural difficulties’ are often best explained by skill deficits, underlying emotional difficulties, trauma, and a disconnect between adult expectations and the child’s capacity to meet these demands.

We seek to understand each person, the context within which they live, and their strengths and vulnerabilities so we can work together to develop and achieve their goals providing support for the client to create the life they want.  Man or tree

We are a neurodivergent affirming practice two of our core values are integrity and curiosity. This means we act and actively engage in what we say we are and what we say we do. We welcome, celebrate, and support ALL clients. We provide supports to our neurodivergent clients in a way that is client centred and aligned with the client’s values. We assume competence and trust that the client knows best. We are aware of the trauma many neurodivergent folk carry with them and seek to support these clients in a way that acknowledges the trauma and allows for safe discussion and exploration of each client’s experience and perspective. We work hard to identify and manage any ableism that may exist, understanding that for many personal biases are often deeply entrenched and challenging to identify and navigate. When engaging in learning about best practice neurodiverse affirming work, we seek education from lived experience, specifically allied health providers that identify as autistic and/or ADHD.
